El Anzuelo Fino on Urbanspoon
Disclaimer: I was invited as a guest to this establishment for a complimentary meal. All opinions expressed in this post are my own.

I was recently invited to El Anzuelo Fino, a family owned Peruvian restaurant, which has locations in Jackson Heights and Woodside in Queens.

What I went in expecting was a Pio- Pio styled Peruvian meal (not that there’s anything wrong with that) but the experience I came away with was something completely different.

Boris Torres, the son and face of the next generation at El Anzuelo Fino, is a professionally trained chef as well as an architect.

Both professions require fashioning an art form and that is exactly what Torres does on the plate. He is a truly gifted chef who is pushing the boundaries of Peruvian food into modernity whilst still staying close its roots and heritage.

Torres schooled me throughout the meal on the complexity, depth and phenomenal ethnic influences that have fashioned Peruvian cuisine. Each dish that was presented to me had a little history lesson on how its flavors borrowed from its cultural past.

Be it African, Chinese – “Chifa”, Japanese –“Nikkei”, Spanish or Italian, Torres’s creations pay true homage to a gastronomic heritage that is so rich. Take the classic favorite “Lomo Saltado” for example, which is made with sautéed beef tips, onions, tomatoes, reduced with soy sauce and served over French fries. What seems like a crazy combination of flavors actually works beautifully! Look at all the cross cultural pollination going on in that dish!

The Anticuchos con Papa or veal hearts drew on African heritage whilst their superb Ceviche draws on Spanish influences.

At El Anzuelo Fino, do not miss trying the Corvina, which is a firm-fleshed South American fish. We sampled a Ceviche and  an “A-la- Plancha” version of this fish and both dishes were spectacular.

El Anzuelo Fino, in my opinion is truly a gem of a find. Located in its unassuming digs one can really find artful creations of seriously tasty, home-style Peruvian food here.

I, for one, am a fan!

Wandering Moose Cafe & Caterng on Urbanspoon

If you ever happen to go skiing at Mohawk Mountain, CT, then the Wandering Moose Café is a nice little café option for a pleasant meal.

Located right by the covered bridge in West Cornwall, it has a view of the beautiful river and picturesque mountains in the background. In the warmer months, sitting outside must be a feast for the eyes.

The food here is rather average. Nothing outstanding but the service is very friendly and the place has soul. Its seems to be frequented by locals and the menu offers better food choices than most other places in this area ( choice is rather limited).

We tried their brunch where the highlights of our meal were the pancakes, corn beef hash and a really delicious homemade carrot cake.

So do stop off for a meal, a cup of tea or just a spot of dessert. The Wandering Moose Café promises to soothe the “wandering” soul.

Here is some of what we ate:

CORN BEEF HASH AND EGGS

BUTTERMILK PANCAKES WITH BLUEBERRIES AND CHOCOLATE CHIPS

EGG SANDWICH WITH BACON

EGGS BENEDICT

CARROT CAKE

BUCK’S STRAWBERRY AND MINT CHOCOLATE CHIP ICE-CREAM

The Almondine Bakery now has a second location in Park Slope!

The former pastry chef from Le Bernardin and Windows on the World Hervé Poussot has been serving up delectable treats at this French patisserie in Brooklyn for quite some time now.

Using ultra fresh ingredients, Almondine offers a host of fresh-baked French goods such as croissants, fruit tarts, muffins, macarons, baguettes, pastries and more. They serve delicious coffee using La Colombe beans from Philadelphia and a decadent hot chocolate made with Valrhona chocolate.

The Park Slope Almondine is housed in a small cozy space with a working fireplace, which seats about 25. Located right by the train station, it is really hard not to make a small detour to start your day just right!

The Buffet (Wynn) on Urbanspoon

Food: ☆☆☆ 1/2

Service: ☆☆☆

Ambiance: ☆☆☆☆

Cost: $$$

All buffets are not made equally and the Wynn Buffet is certainly many cuts above the rest!!

I am not a fan of buffets and find that generally they are filled with un-thoughtful, generic dishes to please the hungry masses. The buffet at the Wynn however proves to be very different.

Set in a whimsical dining room within a bright atrium, filled with multicolored fruits and flowers, the offerings are unbelievable in variety, quality and flavor. It took me a good 10 minutes just to walk the buffet to wrap my head around all the options I had.

Fresh salads, soups, seafood, meats, vegetables, sushi, Chinese food, hand pulled noodles, Mexican options, Italian food, vegetables galore, live cooking stations – a room full of desserts…the list just goes on and on and on.

The buffet at the Wynn is priced a little higher than others but for this quality of food – I would say that it’s worth every penny!
