Last night I was invited by Tabélog to attend ‘Nipponista‘, an event hosted by Isetan, the largest department store in Japan. Nipponista is part of a Japanese project called ‘Cool Japan’ and was created to transmit Japanese fashion, art and food information throughout the world.

Must try: Grilled Maitake Mushrooms, Raw Shaved Fluke, Guacamole with Grapefruit Salsa

ABC Cocina is Jean-Georges Vongerichten and executive chef Dan Kluger’s endeavor at inventive, Latin inspired, tapas style fare.

Housed within the stunning ABC Carpet & Home Store, this hot spot is fashioned in abcmkt’s eclectic style – an aesthetic I love (of course everything is available for purchase on the shop floor).

The menu consists of seven sections with choices that range from a “Raw Bar” to “Light and Bright” to “Wood Burning Grill” and more.

The cuisine is based on flavors from Latin America and Spain and is for most part executed rather well. Dishes that blew me away were the “Raw Shaved Fluke with Green Chili Dressing” and the “Grilled Maitake Mushrooms”. Other such as the “Fish Taco” felt lacking in clean flavors and brightness as is was unnecessarily doused with some kind of creamy heavy Russian type dressing. The “Short Rib Tacos” though are a clear winner!

Service was very pleasant but uneven. We were kept waiting for fairly long spells between certain dishes.

I didn’t fall in love with ABC Cocina the way that I did with ABC Kitchen….but the small plate fare piqued my interest enough to make warrant several revisits.

Must try: Pork Bun, Shrimp Bun

Momofuku Noodle Bar was David Chang’s very first eatery that launched his enormously successful Momofuku brand of restaurants.

The concise menu here primarily focuses on ramen, seasonal eats, buns and daily specials. They also offer a fried chicken dinner (priced at $100) for parties of 4-8, which must be reserved in advance. Dessert offers soft serve and cake truffles.

Chang’s eats are inventive and extremely gratifying. The Ramen was good enough though I still think Ippudo rules. However, what I just could not stop eating were the buns! These soft steamed beauties filled with melt in your mouth pork belly or fried shrimp with just the right crunch are seriously addictive.

The Noodle Bar is priced just right, that is of course if you can stop with just eating one order of them buns! I know that I certainly couldn’t.

Here is some of what we ate:

Heirloom Tomato – watermelon, crab, avocado

Pork Bun – hoisin, scallion, cucumber

Shrimp Bun – spicy mayo, pickled shallot, iceberg

Momofuku Ramen – pork belly, pork shoulder, poached egg

Ginger Scallion Noodles – pickled shiitakes, cucumber, cabbage

Spicy Miso Ramen – smoked chicken, swiss chard, sesame

Ça Va Todd English is a French Brasserie with a Mediterranean twist. Ça Va is located in the heart of the Times Square/ Theater district in the contemporary Intercontinental Hotel. The space is crisply modern. The food is enticing enough but the service….oh the service….was friendly but grossly inept. I’m not sure if the kitchen was running slow or the servers but we never received our bread basket, it took so long just to flag someone down to refill our water or make special requests … and it took eons to get our dessert.

Ça Va has a nice enough menu with decent fare. It offers a nice break from the cacophony of the busyness that exists outside its doors. However I’m not sure I would go back as once I was on the inside, I found it wasn’t exactly the sort of relaxing retreat I had hoped for.

Here is some of what we ate:

MUSHROOM VELOUTE

CHICKEN SALAD CREPE

LA SALADE ÇA VA

POMME FRITES

LOUP DE MER RÔTI

APRICOT BREAD PUDDING
