Must try: Grilled Maitake Mushrooms, Raw Shaved Fluke, Guacamole with Grapefruit Salsa

ABC Cocina is Jean-Georges Vongerichten and executive chef Dan Kluger’s endeavor at inventive, Latin inspired, tapas style fare.

Housed within the stunning ABC Carpet & Home Store, this hot spot is fashioned in abcmkt’s eclectic style – an aesthetic I love (of course everything is available for purchase on the shop floor).

The menu consists of seven sections with choices that range from a “Raw Bar” to “Light and Bright” to “Wood Burning Grill” and more.

The cuisine is based on flavors from Latin America and Spain and is for most part executed rather well. Dishes that blew me away were the “Raw Shaved Fluke with Green Chili Dressing” and the “Grilled Maitake Mushrooms”. Other such as the “Fish Taco” felt lacking in clean flavors and brightness as is was unnecessarily doused with some kind of creamy heavy Russian type dressing. The “Short Rib Tacos” though are a clear winner!

Service was very pleasant but uneven. We were kept waiting for fairly long spells between certain dishes.

I didn’t fall in love with ABC Cocina the way that I did with ABC Kitchen….but the small plate fare piqued my interest enough to make warrant several revisits.

Tableau might be one of the best-kept secrets at the Wynn.

This elegantly whimsical restaurant is tucked away in a serene corner of the Wynn Hotel. Overlooking a pool and garden, Tableau offers a luxurious breakfast and lunch menu. The food here is top-notch as is the service and the prices.

Known for its Saturday and Sunday brunch – Tableau really offers a wonderful respite from the brisk pulse of the Vegas beat.

Busboys and Poets is an inspired, bohemian bookstore/Cafe/ Lounge, which propounds progressive political ideologies.

This cheery cafe has been brilliantly decorated by carving out comfortable spaces with lounge chairs and sofas amongst walls that are adorned with multi-ethnic art and photographs. Everything here murmurs towards creativity and activism.

There are regularly scheduled poetry jams, film screenings and other shows in the Langston Room, which is a performance space. Here, one can sip on a variety of coffees or nibble on sizable portions of affordable, tasty platters of food

Busboys and Poets was named in honour of Langston Hughes (one of my favourite poets), who worked as a busboy in the 1920s whilst writing poems on the side.

Busboys and Poets is a perfect spot for its diverse clientele to gather together to eat great food whilst being inspired to act.

Here is some of what we ate:

 Classic Benedict

Neptune Benedict with Cheese Grits

Mekhleme

Momofuku Noodle Bar on Urbanspoon

Must try: Pork Bun, Shrimp Bun

Momofuku Noodle Bar was David Chang’s very first eatery that launched his enormously successful Momofuku brand of restaurants.

The concise menu here primarily focuses on ramen, seasonal eats, buns and daily specials. They also offer a fried chicken dinner (priced at $100) for parties of 4-8, which must be reserved in advance. Dessert offers soft serve and cake truffles.

Chang’s eats are inventive and extremely gratifying. The Ramen was good enough though I still think Ippudo rules. However, what I just could not stop eating were the buns! These soft steamed beauties filled with melt in your mouth pork belly or fried shrimp with just the right crunch are seriously addictive.

The Noodle Bar is priced just right, that is of course if you can stop with just eating one order of them buns! I know that I certainly couldn’t.

Here is some of what we ate:

Heirloom Tomato – watermelon, crab, avocado

Pork Bun – hoisin, scallion, cucumber

Shrimp Bun – spicy mayo, pickled shallot, iceberg

Momofuku Ramen – pork belly, pork shoulder, poached egg

Ginger Scallion Noodles – pickled shiitakes, cucumber, cabbage

Spicy Miso Ramen – smoked chicken, swiss chard, sesame

Masahru Morimoto’s imposing iron chef personality sure does translate into his restaurant.

His sprawling, modern, cavernous restaurant is quite magnificent. One of the most striking elements is the wall made of bottles filled with clear liquid, which has an interesting play of lights on it. There is a very funky bar area downstairs alongside some really cool bathrooms. Read the rest of this entry

Dishes not to miss: Seared Lamb Chops

Casa Tua, is a delightful Italian-style eatery in the heart of South Beach, which is set in a gorgeous Mediterranean-style house/ hotel. This restaurant flows through various parts of the house, where each area is decorated with intimate elegance. We dined in the charming outdoor garden area.

Casa Tua lived up to my expectations in its ambience and charm but disappointed when it came to service and food. Most of the dishes just failed to impress. The seared lamb chops was the one dish that really stood out but the rest of the food fell rather flat. The service was rather unimpressive too. At a place like this, you expect to be indulged in every way – no such luck here.

For the price point and the hype, I really think Casa Tua was unsuccessful at reaching its true potentiality.

Here is some of what we ate:

SEARED LAMB CHOP

TAGLIOLINI WITH MAINE LOBSTER WHITE ASPARAGUS SAUCE
