Must try: Chicken and Banana Blossom Salad, Khao Soi, Grilled Blowfish Tails

Uncle Boons is a wonderful downtown dining spot serving uncommon Thai fare.

This eatery was opened the by husband and wife team of Ann Redding and Matt Danzer, both of ex- Per Se pedigree.

The menu here shies away from the regular Thai offerings of copious amounts of curries, noodles, satays and so on. The selection here is limited but in a thoughtful way.

Many of the recipes used in the kitchen are handed down from Redding’s family – who was born in Thailand. Where else can one try delicate dish of tender charcoal-grilled blowfish tails served with a fresh green chili sauce or chicken and banana blossom salad with several layers of flavor and texture in every bite. The Khao Soi is a must try dish consisting of a flavorful yellow curry served with both soft and crunchy noodles.

The one thing I missed at Uncle Boons was spice. The menu seems to focus more on the gentler side of Thai food which is refreshing too.

At Uncle Boons the attention seems to be on creating a culinary experience that is a little set apart from the rest and yet authentic in its core.

Here is some of what we ate:

Must try: Grilled Maitake Mushrooms, Raw Shaved Fluke, Guacamole with Grapefruit Salsa

ABC Cocina is Jean-Georges Vongerichten and executive chef Dan Kluger’s endeavor at inventive, Latin inspired, tapas style fare.

Housed within the stunning ABC Carpet & Home Store, this hot spot is fashioned in abcmkt’s eclectic style – an aesthetic I love (of course everything is available for purchase on the shop floor).

The menu consists of seven sections with choices that range from a “Raw Bar” to “Light and Bright” to “Wood Burning Grill” and more.

The cuisine is based on flavors from Latin America and Spain and is for most part executed rather well. Dishes that blew me away were the “Raw Shaved Fluke with Green Chili Dressing” and the “Grilled Maitake Mushrooms”. Other such as the “Fish Taco” felt lacking in clean flavors and brightness as is was unnecessarily doused with some kind of creamy heavy Russian type dressing. The “Short Rib Tacos” though are a clear winner!

Service was very pleasant but uneven. We were kept waiting for fairly long spells between certain dishes.

I didn’t fall in love with ABC Cocina the way that I did with ABC Kitchen….but the small plate fare piqued my interest enough to make warrant several revisits.

Must try: Ackee Dip And Plantain Chips , Jerk Chicken

Jerk chicken does not get better this!

Miss Lily’s is my new Mecca for Caribbean food in New York City.

The menu offers modern Jamaican food, which maintains its authentic roots. Chef Bradford Thompson is French trained and has racked up accolades from Food and Wine and James Beard for best chef. All his skills are evident in just one dish – the Jerk chicken! I have never had a bird more tender yet spiced and grilled to perfect crispness.

I really enjoyed everything I tried there. The plantain chips with Akki dip was fabulous and the curried goat with roti was yummy too, albeit a bit watery for my taste. The hot sauces were really spicy and added all the more to the fun and flavor of this wonderful Caribbean oasis!

Multifaceted in its structure – Miss Lily’s weaves in and out of avatars in its Houston Street location. There are three facets to this spot that you can enjoy.

One is the Miss Lily’s bar/ restaurant part. Then there Miss Lily’s Variety & Bake Shop and Melvin’s Juice Box. This is a West Indian Boutique, record store, casual café, bakery and juice bar all rolled into one. The variety store is home to Radio Lily which is Miss Lily’s Internet radio station where a DJ is live streaming Reggae beats. This creates what they refer to as a “cultural social club”.

Basically what is – is a really cool space to hang out at with great eats at arms reach!

Here is some of what we ate:

Ginger Beer

Jaquitos

Ackee Dip And Plantain Chips

Jerk Chicken

Curried Goat

Roti and Rice and Beans
