I was recently invited to a press review of the bright and cheery eatery “Tikka Indian Grill” in Williamsburg.
Co-owned by Executive Chef Mallika Khan and partner Sayeed, both from Bangladesh, the menu here offers an eclectic mix of dishes from different regions of India. The recipes used are inspired by Khan’s mothers cooking along with her experiences of working in several well-known establishments in India and London.
During our tasting we were treated to several dishes from across the menu. As a starter I highly recommend the “Panch Poran Jhinga” which is popular in the Kolkata region of India. This prawn dish was deliciously flavored with five different kinds of spices. It was one of my favorite dishes of the entire meal.
For our main course we chose to sample some of the more unusual dishes on the menu such as the “Pumpkin Kala Channa” a wonderfully earthy dish made with pumpkin, black chickpeas – tempered with mustard seeds.
You must try the “Patra Ni Machi” which was made with salmon, steamed in a banana leaf covered with mint chutney. Though the vegetables accompanying the dish were highly overcooked, the fish was beautifully executed.
They also serve up good renditions of the staple favorites like “Chicken Tikka Masla” and “Naan”. The servers here are wonderful – a special shoutout to Mohammad Selim Khan who looked after us so well.
I think that Tikka Indian Grill adds real spice and pizzazz to the already hip dining scene of Williamsburg – go and try it!
