ABC Kitchen just might be my new favorite restaurant. I’m not a huge fan of the Jean-Georges empire but I think he hit this one out of the ballpark!
ABC Kitchen is Vongerichten’s high-end ode to the whole locavore movement that has New York City in a tizzy. Housed in the gorgeously whimsical ABC Carpet and Home store, the restaurant’s setting is farmhouse shabby chic.
At ABC Kitchen, not only is the food sourced locally and sustainably, so is the décor. The tables and chairs are made from reclaimed materials whilst the porcelain ware and baskets are handmade by local artisans and indigenous people of Patagonia.
The whimsical theme of the store continuous into the restaurant with country chic décor and tables set with dainty wildflowers. In this artistic space it is not unusual to see celebrities like Deepak Chopra floating around in the background. I love how one reviewer described the ambience as “spiritually materialistic”!
But lets get to the best part – the food! They serve the best crab toast I have ever eaten. This grilled toast, is heaped with mounds of fresh peek toe crab drizzled with olive oil and lemon aioli. It is a stunning dish!
I also tried the Wood Roasted Lobster which was superb too, as was their herbed pizza. All of this stupendous food is served by a young but impeccable staff, dressed in cute little plaid shirts, jeans and converse sneakers.
The one thing that failed to impress was the dessert. Nothing I tried blew me away. But after a meal like that…I still walked away really satisfied!!
Here is some of what we ate:
Heirloom Tomato Toast
Crab Toast with Lemon Aioli
Line Caught Tuna Sashimi
Pretzel Dusted Calamari
Spinach Goat Cheese and Herbs
Wood Oven Roasted Maine Lobster
Roast Suckling Pig
Chocolate Cake with malted chocolate ganache
Salted Caramel Ice Cream
Warm Doughnuts vanilla cream, bacon fudge sauce
