Last week I spent a fascinating evening re-imagining mustard at the Maille Boutique on New York’s Upper West Side.
Maille is a premium French mustard brand which is centuries old and has a long legacy of being one of the finest purveyors of Dijon and whole grain mustards and vinegars in the world.
What began in 1747 by Antoine Maille in Dijon has served the likes of King Louis XV of France and Queen Victoria over time and now has full-fledged mustard boutiques in Paris, London, Dijon and New York.
The boutique has a Mustard Sommelier, Pierette Huttner, who serves as a marvelous guide to the numerous choices that Maille offers. She makes wonderful suggestion on how to pair foods with the mustards that one buys. There are even several recipes available on hand.
At the boutique, mustards are available on tap which can be pumped into Maille’s beautiful reusable stoneware jars.
The wide-range of flavors offered run the gamut from traditional ones to fig and coriander, white wine, black truffle and so much more.
At the tasting event we sampled artful creations of delicate finger foods paired with an array of fine mustards.
The evening was flawlessly executed and I for one came out with a whole new definition of what mustard is and a bag filled with Maille goodies!
