R&G Lounge is located in the heart of San Francisco’s historic Chinatown. R&G is very well known to the locals of this area but was made famous by Anthony Bourdain’s – No Reservation in San Francisco episode.
This split-level restaurant has very well priced, family style digs in the basement whilst the upstairs houses a more upscale, elegant dinning room.
At R&G, they serve Hong Kong style Cantonese food which is fresh and tasty. It’s not outstanding but the food is pretty good.
The service could have been much better – the waiters were not very obliging or attentive – but then again – it is Chinatown!
Here is some of what we ate:
CRAB WITH SALT AND PEPPER
This is the dish made famous by Bourdain. It is a live battered crab sprinkled with salt and pepper seasonings. The crab was fresh and the dish was tasty.
PRAWNS AND SNOW PEAS
This was the dish I enjoyed the most. The shrimp was sautéed in a very flavorful sauce with a nice kick of heat and the snow peas were perfectly crisp. The combinations in this dish worked very well.
PEKING DUCK
Their peking duck was good enough – not the best I’ve had. It was served thick steamed buns and a special house sauce.
KUNG PAO CHICKEN
Their Kung Pao chicken had great crunchy vegetables in it. It was not spicy at all though.
CHICKEN FRIED RICE
Their fried rice was delicious. It was really simply made with just scallions, chicken, egg and sliced cabbage. The results were outstanding!
