I was recently invited for a press review to Hunter’s, a new American bistro on Smith Street in Carroll Gardens. Co-owned by Chef Angelo Schifilliti, formerly at Landmarc and Fernando Camberos, Hunter’s brings that down home, neighborhood charm to the block.
The menu here offers a variety of dishes that spell comfort but with a thoughtful edge to it. There are choices that range from ‘mussels’ to ‘mac ‘n’ cheese’.
Do try their ‘Grilled Kale Salad’, which differentiates itself by grilling the kale which almost gives it a sort of meaty edge to it. I’ve never quite tried anything like it before.
The beef tartare was really interesting too made with an in-house remoulade which was chockfull of crunchy vegetables and served with thin crispy onion rings.
Chef Schifilliti is also known for his pastas, all-handmade such as the ‘Agnolotti’ stuffed with butternut squash topped with sage brown butter, brussel leaves and pepitas.
Hunter’s tries to source its ingredients from sustainable sources and stay as local as possible. The service is wonderful, the place is homey and I just have to send the biggest hug of to Fernando Camberos who is one of the sweetest, kindest hosts you could possibly hope for.
Here is some of what we ate:
Bread
Marinated Beets Salad
Grilled Kale Salad
Beef Tartare
Agnolotti
Braised Beef w/ Polenta, Mushrooms & Wilted Greens
