Nair Mess is not easy to find. Located down a narrow winding street, diagonally opposite the Madras Chepauk Cricket Stadium, this Mess feeds everyone from local residents to rabid sports fans.

The day we visited – in classic Indian style there was no electricity – we decided we would brave it and eat in the dark regardless. I’m glad we chose to stay because the meal we had was pretty darned good.

You must try their fish fry – it was awesome as was their omelet. The vegetables, curries and everything we tried had a homemade touch to it.

Family owned and run, if you dare to brave the really local joints that make up the “real” Chennai – do put Nair Mess on your list.
