Amylos Taverna is a wonderful new spot in Astoria, which blends the old with the new beautifully. Located just a walk away from the famous Omonia Café, the Arvanitis family attempts to combine traditional Greek fare with a contemporary sensibility at their newest venture.
The Amylos kitchen presents an extensive menu influenced by family recipes from the Arvanitis family.
We started out with the appetizers of which our favorites (of what we tried) was the sushi grade octopus and the smoked meatballs.
The menu progresses to super fresh fish options of which we chose the lavraki. It was perfectly cooked and topped with olive oil, herbs and lemon.
The “Garidomakaronada” came highly recommended to us and though I would tend not to order a shrimp and linguine dish at a Greek restaurant, this dish was really worth trying. Plump, juicy, perfectly cooked shrimp were slathered in a tangy, delicious tomato sauce.
I would pass on the desserts – we tried the Karydopita and the Ekmek, neither of which we loved but with so much good food – you really have no room for dessert.
Amylos Taverna is a wonderful new additional to the Astoria dining scene. It’s great to have a spot which has both really good food and elegant surroundings. I can’t wait to go back.
