Senso Unico, Sunnyside/Astoria, NYC

There is a delightful slice of Italy at Senso Unico right here in Queens.

Chef Vincenzo Garofalo and wife Laura are serving up seasonal Italian dishes sprinkled with a taste of home in rustic digs in Sunnyside.

Hailing from Avellino, Italy Chef Garofalo combines his roots with his professional training at top notch spots such as Antica Osteria Nonna Rosa and Il Pellicano in Italy and Siro Ristorante and Le Cirque in the US.

We visited Senso Unico whilst we could still savor left over bits of summer and chose to dine al fresco. We started our evening off with this bubbly glass of prosecco which paired perfectly with Chef Garofalo’s selections of antipasti which were outstanding.

The menu here is thoughtful and reflects seasonal influences where everything is made in-house. One of the highlights was the Fusilli Avellinesi – rooted in his hometown of Avellino which is made with fresh spiral pasta, pork sausages and dressed in tomato-truffle sauce.

The desserts are definitely worth a try with the deconstructed Napoleon being a work of art.

Senso Unico has a wonderful selection of Italian wines amongst others and great cocktails.

Here is some of what we ate:

Carpaccio di Carne

Marinated Mushrooms

Anchovies

Fusilli Avellinesi

Chestnut Gnocchi

Deconstructed Napoleon

Warm Apple Tartelette
